During this very piano-ish week in New York, you can catch performances of familiar repertoire by the likes of Pollini, Kissin, Andsnes, and Trifonov at Carnegie or Geffen Halls—but try to make room Friday night for a special event just across the East River.
The intrepid new-music pianist Lisa Moore will come to Brooklyn’s Bargemusic with all three of the major piano works of Leoš Janáček, the one-of-a-kind Czech composer whose music, 90 years after his death, seems to sound more and more contemporary.
Heard one at a time, sandwiched between Beethoven and Chopin on a recital program, Janáček’s On an Overgrown Path, Sonata “From the Street, x.1.1905,” or In the Mists offers an exotic interlude. Taken together, they paint an intimate portrait of a composer better known for impressive operas and symphonic works. Whether recalling long-ago grief or reacting spontaneously to a tragic political event, Janáček holds nothing back, and it’s likely Moore’s performance will do likewise.
