The top choice for classical music to begin January is, as it has been for the past four years, the Prototype Festival. The festival is the most prominent showcase for opera and music drama that composers are making right now, in and of itself a consideration. And Prototype delivers consistently skillful and professional productions.

When it comes to new, the first response is often young, and the vanguard will be representing by the likes of Gregory Spears, returning with his Fellow Travelers, an opera about the painful conjunction of both the Red scare and the “Lavender Scare” in 1950s Washington, D.C.. There is also the world premiere of Mikael Karlsson’s Echo Drift, set in a prison cell.

Tuesday night’s festival opener, Michael Gordon’s Acquanetta, has already set the bar high for this year’s events.

The Prototype Festival runs through January 20 at various venues. prototypefestival.org
