Frederic Rzewski

Fred Rzewski is one of the great American composers, and his career paradoxically suffers from the monumental greatness of one specific work, The People United Will Never Be Defeated! An amazingly popular (in relative terms) piece of contemporary classical music, it so dominates concert programming and recordings—at least a dozen—that it’s rare that one has the chance to hear anything else of his.

Miller Theatre and the Del Sol String Quartet will be filling in a part of that gap this Thursday, with the final Composer Portrait of the season. The ensemble hints at what to expect–compositions by Rzewski for string quartet. That alone will make for a special experience, and more so because the music either has never been heard or likely hasn’t been heard in decades.

Del Sol will play Rzewki’s 1955 String Quartet, composed when he was a teenager, and then will deliver the world premiere of Words, co-commissioned by the quartet and Miller. Expectations should be high.

Del Sol Quartet plays music of Fred Rzewski, 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller Theatre. millertheatre.com
