Theo Bleckmann

Labeling baritone Theo Bleckmann and pianist Uri Caine as classical musicians is both accurate and misleading. Yes, they play classical repertory, but they also play jazz, new music, and dip into all sorts of popular, even experimental genres.

They make music and, often, remake music. A few years ago the two took on Schumann’s Dichterliebe and used it to show the fundamental pleasure of song—Schumann in the manner of a bossa nova, Sinatra style swing, or a Weill/Brecht collaboration.

Friday at National Sawdust, the two will transform Schubert’s Die Winterreise. Expect sophisticated and imaginative music-making that is true to Schubert along with plenty of surprises. And there will be more: the punning use of a synthetic ice skating rink, with choreographed skaters from the Ice Theater of New York.

Theo Bleckmann, Uri Caine, and the Ice Theater of New York perform Schubert’s Die Winterreise 7 p.m. Friday. nationalsawdust.org
