Hvorostovsky withdraws from Met’s “Onegin”

Dmitri Hvorostovsky has withdrawn from the upcoming Metropolitan Opera performances of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, the company announced Thursday. The title role will now be split between Mariusz Kwiecien (March 30, April 3 and 7) and Peter Mattei (April 12, 15, 18, and 22). Go to metopera.org.

The Siberian baritone revealed last year that he was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. He has continued to perform, including Il Trovatore at the Met last September and a February recital at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

In a statement released Thursday, the singer said balance issues from his illness have made it too difficult to continue to perform staged opera.

To all my friends, fans and colleagues:

It is with great sadness that I must withdraw from opera performances for the foreseeable future.

I have been experiencing balance issues associated with my illness, making it extremely difficult for me to perform in staged productions.

I will continue to give concerts and recitals as well as make recordings. Singing is my life, and I want to continue bringing joy to people worldwide.

With this pause in my operatic career and more rest in between each engagement, I hope to have more time to focus on my health and treatment.

Thank you for all your love, messages and well wishes. Your support is felt and means the world to me.

With love,

DMITRI HVOROSTOVSKY

    Dear Mr. Hvorostovsky,

What sadness to hear that your illness is keeping you from staged opera. We were all looking forward eagerly to hear you in Onegin but we hope that rest and treatment and a lower pressure schedule will facilitate your healing. We pray for the best for you and your family.
